The fashionista in me is cringing at all these proposed bridesmaid dresses...  Who would want to wear an office dress made out of shiny taffeta?  Why do the rest look like soggy caveman chiffon?  Did they really need to add a puffy flower there?  Is this really how I want preserved in someone's photo album forever?

Cardio

I never thought I'd say this, but sometimes regular shopping is much more exhausting than thrifting.

The difficult part about retail is that you have to wade through everything - each piece which catches the eye, and could theoretically be a good buy to some degree - and discern what you actually like and what you're actually being tricked into liking.  It's harder to pinpoint what pieces are actually special.  After a few stores you start recognizing the same trends and wonder whether you should've bought it from this place instead of that one, whether it really makes a difference that this brand put an extra ruffle here.  When they don't carry your size, you try to convince yourself that either you can squeeze into the smaller one or make it work with the bigger one.  And of course, there's the eternal struggle of "Do I really like it thi$ much"?

Then, I realized it was $50.  And it was too big.  AND it wasn't the dress form for draping (where you can stick pins in and such), but simply for display.  Sadness.

Free shipping hack

I hate paying for shipping.  It's a perfectly reasonable fee to ask for, but it just always seems to come as a shock when I compare with the original price and what the final charge is.  Furthermore, free shipping almost always has a minimum purchase value that's difficult to meet (then you're forced to buy things just 'cause, to meet the limit).

Lately, I've been finding a way to get free shipping even when only buying one item - go to the store in person and ask the sales associate to place an order for you.  Shipping will be free, and it'll get delivered right to your house!  It's a great option especially if say they don't have the size/color you need, if they run out of the item itself in-store, etc.  I've tried this with both American Eagle and LOFT and so I'm assuming that any major mall stores would be willing to do this for you.

(Of course, this only works if you can access the store in person.  This may or may not be applicable for online exclusive items or online-only sales.)

Tomorrow's a holiday... (plus a brewing idea)

...  That means thrift haul marathons on Youtube.  My life is glamorous.

I really like writing on this blog, but there are some things that you just can't convey with words and pictures.  So I kind of wanted to start my own Youtube channel.  Mainly to show my own thrift hauls, and to maybe find other people who are a little too interested in style like me haha.  I don't even have a fancy camera or a cool video editing program.  It'd probably be the same 3-4 friends watching each time (although that's not the point anyway).

Bad idea?  I don't know.  But it might be fun...?

The stages of heel pain

1.  Oh, these new heels are pretty comfortable!  I can twirl around in them.  No feet scrunching, gaps, all is good.  I can wear them for the interview day, no problem...

2.  Did my feet get smaller?  Why am I sliding down into the toes?  Why do my heels keep popping out?

3.  Just pretend I'm a ballerina and power through the pain.

4.  My feet are so swollen that the heels fit again.

5.  Take off the shoes, see the ugly results.

Can't afford to stick it to the man

My most immediate confidence boost would come from wearing an edgy, fashion-forward ensemble and styling my hair into Victoria's Secret waves for my interview... but then that would be considered distracting and unprofessional.  Who says doctors can't be expressive with their outfits?  Even then, we're going to have to do a lot of walking around during the tour, and it might be rainy and cold over there.

Inner self vs. outer practicality... not worth the risk at this point.  I guess I'll have to reign in the fashionista this time.

Uncharacteristic

Today, I dressed somewhat unlike myself.  Sweats, and the color black.  Guess it kind of reflects my mood/mentality nowadays.

During the day (to take the GRE) I wore a pale grey sweatshirt that was free from being on the Bubble staff.  Like, a hoodie without a hood.  Doesn't sound like the most attractive thing, right?  But I didn't want to bother with looking good while taking the 4 hour test.

And for this first-time bible study/hangout at night, I didn't want to "make an entrance" so I went with black.  I hardly ever wear black (discounting some outerwear) because my hair is already black, so it tends to make me feel gothic. 

 

Outback Red Fairisle Peplum Sweater (from the Limited)

Got this sweater about a week ago.  It is actually a lot cuter in person.  The slightly metallic gold threads and heavy pattern made it feel less dark and dreary.  Plus a peplum detail and 3/4 sleeves, so I guess it still had my aesthetic, but black is definitely a rare thing to find me in.  It's sort of a "good impression, but no statement" sweater?

The Scientist

Sometimes I look at the remnants of my teenage wardrobe and go...

Back then, none of my clothes really communicated well together.  There was no cohesion or theme of any sort, so mixing and creativity was a problem.  With such a selection, you often feel like you have nothing to wear even if it's overflowing.  I was often blinded by brands and sales, even if quality, worth, or even overall style was lacking.  Hence some things that are too big/too small that were bought because they were on sale, and several ill-fitting, boring Hollister pieces that I would have given away already if it weren't for the original price tag...

Yet, I will give myself the credit for being experimental.  I chose some voluminous jackets and pieces in interesting colors.  It's a continual learning experience in how to shop and how to dress.  And because you constantly change, so does your wardrobe.  Even if life might seem in a bit of a rut, the right clothes can slowly prompt you to get out of it.
